Programs of Academic Recharging (PAR A, B, and C)

The Programs of Academic Recharging (PAR A, B, and C) are customized programs designed to provide Indonesian university administrators, professors, senior lecturers, and lecturers who hold doctoral degrees with extended periods of professional development study abroad. The program goals include strengthening ongoing linkages among U.S. and Indonesian universities, developing collaborative degree and exchange programs, preparing articles and books for publication, and planning or conducting joint research.

PAR A is a 14-day program for university administrators to design collaborative U.S./Indonesia graduate programming. PAR B is a four-month program for professors and senior lecturers to develop teaching/learning materials, to begin or finish writing a book in progress, or to develop a research proposal or an international paper. PAR C is a four-month program for lecturers with earned doctoral degrees to plan or conduct joint research with partner university professors or prepare a paper for international publication.

Program Components

PAR A was offered at USINTEC universities in the U.S. in 2009. It consisted of the following components:

• Discussions and planning with faculty, graduate school deans, graduate program deans and directors, vice provosts for international affairs, center directors, other leaders responsible for management of research, international institutional partnerships, and distance education at Ohio State University, Indiana University, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
• Planning for development of dual degree programs, graduate exchange programs, collaborative research, and a virtual library among U.S. and Indonesian partner universities
• Tours and discussions with faculty and staff in relevant university facilities
• Transportation from Ohio State University to Indiana University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
• Air travel to Washington D.C.
• Discussions with leaders at the U.S. Department of State, United States/ Indonesia Society, and Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, to solicit support for U.S./Indonesia collaborative graduate programming
• Customized academic and program support services

PAR B and PAR C offered at USINTEC universities in the U.S. consists of the following components:

• Post-arrival orientations, campus tours, and working sessions related to on-line library system, J1 visiting scholar immigration status, living in the U.S., program activities, and program requirements
• Attendance in regular courses chosen by individual PAR Program participant in consultation with their faculty counterparts and program staff
• A faculty counterpart/advisor for each PAR Program participant who suggests library and other academic resources, courses to sit in on, conferences to attend, and schools to visit. Counterparts/advisors also provide guidance and feedback on the products participants are developing including but not limited to reference books, learning materials, curricula, research, articles for publication
• A customized non-credit research seminar
• Field trips to local and national educational, cultural, and historical sites in the U.S.
• Regular program meetings with staff
• Customized academic and program support services

41 postdoctoral scholars from the universities below participated in PAR A, B, and C programs at Ohio State University (36), Indiana University (3), and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2).

2010 PAR A, B, C Program Dates

Applications are being processed for the 2010 Programs of Academic Recharging at Ohio State University, Indiana University, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
